PhD thesis in hydrology

Spatial and temporal variability of intense rain events and subsequent hydro-sedimentary transfers in Mediterranean medium-elevation mountains.

This thesis will be performed within the Mediterranean MISTRALS worksite (http://www.mistralshome.org/) of the National Institute of Universe Sciences (INSU) and especially the International Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX; http://www.hymex.org) whose intensive observation periods (EOP for Enhanced Observation periods) take place over the period 2011-2014. HyMeX will provide many opportunities for international contacts and exchanges during the thesis. Research observational systems are deployed during the EOP by the Cévennes-Vivarais Mediterranean Hydrometeorological Observatory (OHM-CV; http://www.ohmcv.fr) which develops observation strategies of heavy rain and extreme floods in the Mediterranean region since 2000. The experimental watersheds component of the observatory is attached to the SOERE Watershed Network (RBV; http://www.rnbv.ipgp.fr), allowing the pooling of expertise between observatories and thematic studies between sites. One originality of the thesis is to associate supervisors of two teams of LTHE (RIVER and HMCI) specializing in hydro-sedimentary transfers and hydrometeorology, respectively. The student will be associated with field observations of EOP but the heart of his/her work will be on the estimation of rain fields and hydro-sedimentary modeling. The thesis has obtained a research grant from the Rhone Alpes region of three years beginning in October 2012; additional funding for travels and expenses will be available through the ANR Floodscale project. The thesis will be performed at LTHE within the Doctoral School Earth, Universe, Environment in Grenoble.
