POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN ENSEMBLE PREDICTION FOR HYDRO-METEOROLOGY

Place: National Centre for Meteorological Research – Research group of atmospheric meteorology (CNRM-GAME), Toulouse, France (http://www.cnrm-game.fr/)

Application deadline: 5th May 2013

Starting dates/duration: start between July and November 2013 / 12 months.

Background:

This position is related to the DISTRIBUTED RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR HYDRO-METEOROLOGY (DRIHM) project (http://www.drihm.eu/) funded by the European commission. DRIHM intends to develop a prototype e-Science environment to facilitate the collaboration between meteorologists, hydrologists, and Earth science experts and provide end-to-end hydro-meteorological research (HMR) services (models, datasets, and post-processing tools) at the European level, with the ability to expand to global scale. The objectives of DRIHM are to lead the definition of a common long-term strategy, to foster the development of new HMR models and observational archives for the study of severe hydro- meteorological events, to promote the execution and analysis of high-end simulations, and to support the dissemination of predictive models as decision analysis tools.

DRIHM combines the European expertise in HMR, in Grid and High Performance Computing (HPC). Joint research activities will improve the efficient use of the European e-Infrastructures, notably Grid and HPC, for HMR modelling and observational databases, model evaluation tool sets and access to HMR model results. Networking activities will disseminate DRIHM results at the European and global levels in order to increase the cohesion of European and possibly worldwide HMR communities and increase the awareness of information and communications technology (ICT) potential for HMR. Service activities will deploy the end-to-end DRIHM services and tools in support of HMR networks and virtual
organizations on top of the existing European e-Infrastructures.

Work description:

The aim of the work is to demonstrate the scientific added value of the DRIHM collaborative e-Infrastructure and its services. The work will consist of, e.g., comparing various atmospheric ensembles based on different convective-scale meteorological models and designing optimal combinations of these ensembles, i.e., multimodel ensembles. This will
be done for selected cases of heavy rainfall events that generated flash floods. The emphasis will be put on the value of the atmospheric ensembles in providing relevant rainfall fields for hydrological simulations of flash floods by the hydrological models of the project partners. The ensembles will be validated through a wealth of observations (raingauge  measurements, radar quantitative precipitation estimates, etc.) provided by the project partners, associated scientific
programmes such as HyMeX, and citizen scientists. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the project partners with a view to improving the efficiency and utility of the e-Infrastructure.

Required qualification:

A PhD in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field is required. Research experience in (ensemble) atmospheric modelling is recommended. Programming skills in Fortran-90 and Unix scripting are essential. Some experience in HPC and Grid computing would be an advantage. Required languages: French or English. The net salary will be approximately 2000 euros/month before income tax.

Application:

For full consideration, an application letter including a detailed statement of research interest, along with a CV (including research experience, publications and conferences, computing skills, different languages, current position, and availability dates) and the names, telephone numbers and email addresses of 2 referees should be sent by email to:

olivier.caumont@meteo.fr  and veronique.ducrocq@meteo.fr

  1. An interesting discussion is definitely worth comment.
I believe that you need to publish more about this subject matter,
it might not be a taboo subject but typically people don’t talk about such subjects. To the next! Kind regards!!
